Thesis Update

The doors are now attached to the cabinet body — tho’ I worry that the hinges look a little witchy. I’ve slightly moistened the warped boards and pressed them with weights — it seems to be working, the doors move freely and close (snugly). The hinges are attached with tiny brads which have a surprisingly sturdy hold, tho’ I’m sure the doors couldn’t hold up to much abuse. The points of the brads can be seen on the inside of the outer shell, but they are not too intrusive. I need to attach a wee “door stop” (covered in the outer shell cloth) to keep the doors from pushing further into the body of the outer shell when closed. The door stop could be magnetized and help to hold the doors closed when they need to be. I must keep in mind that the door stop can be no taller than one board thickness or it will impede the opening of the interior doors and drawers.

I must decide what type of handles will be on the front, the box will probably only support something light. I think I had mentioned ribbon handles before, as they might soften the witchy aspect, but I don’t want it to be foofy, either. One of the nice things about the hinges is that they are “loose pin” which means that the doors are removable. That will be very handy when it comes time to cover the insides of the doors.

I’ve decided that the interior of the box is going to be three inset hinged lid boxes like the outer shell, only with one door instead of two. The inner doors will be simply hinged with cloth, not hardware. The three boxes will each contain six drawers, a la my prototype.

Maybe I’ll work on the paper now. Sigh.
