Silver(ed) Knobs

The title makes me think of Christmas. :)

I experimented with adding “silver” leaf to some small, unfinished wooden knobs that I purchased at the hardware store today. After sealing them with a layer of gesso, I painted them Alizarin Crimson — the perfect color to match the fabric of the box — and then put silver leaf over that. (I learned in my Old Masters class that an undercolor is important — for one thing, the leaf often cracks and crazes, so you want an appropriate color to show through when that happens. It also gives the leaf a little more “life”).

I’m not sure if it’s right or not. It’s very pretty, but maybe too visually heavy? The silver isn’t quite the same color as the hinges, but that may not be important. I’m undecided. After silvering the first one perfectly, I distressed it with some extra fine sandpaper thinking that might help me form an opinion about them. Still not sure. I silvered another knob so that I could compare the two.

I’ve stuck them on the box (temporarily) with scotch tape, and now I think I like the distressed one better (perhaps it could be a little less distressed — or toned with more alizarin crimson over the silver). But I think they need to be smaller, or more delicate, somehow.

Caton votes for the non-distressed knob. I wonder if there is some guideline for proper knob placement? Man, I have to suppress a giggle every time I type knob. Pardon me. :)
