Thanks for the encouraging words, Sini! I really must devote more time to drawing and I like your idea of how to go about it. :)

Lovely sketch Abby! This summer you should bring a comfortable lounge chair out in your garden, a bottle of wine and then draw your house while enjoying the evening sun... Could be a cute drawing to have framed by your entry way.

I have formed quite a connection to our backyard robins. I have delighted in their daily rituals — every morning, for example, the prosperous looking father robin would hold court on a wire that stretches across the backyard. Each morning I would look for him out the bathroom window while brushing my teeth and he was there, almost always— so that I would worry if he was not. After one of their young passed away, I was concerned that the robins would give up on us and leave. A neighbor cat pawed at one of the fledglings who was hopping about on the ground, testing his stubby wings. The fledgling was harmed, but not terribly (I thought). He had a spot of blood on his head and his eye was scratched. I consulted with the Audobon Society and was told that the best thing to do was to put him back in his nest and then move away. It is an old wives' tale that birds will avoid their children if they have the scent of people on them. They will, however, stay away as long as a human being hovers around. So, I returned him to the nest. He looked a little wobbly, but seemed intent on perching on the edge. I left him and was torn up worrying about the little fella, forcing myself to stay away. I checked in on him in the morning to find the nest empty. Further searching revealed the fledgling had fallen out of the nest and expired on the ground. I didn't see robins around for a couple of days afterward and was convinced that they no longer felt our home was safe. To my relief, however, they showed up again a few days later with another fledgeling who fared much better.

Another odd thing, I'm getting emails from the WordPress admin tool asking me to moderate comments for *this* website when the comments themselves are posts from the *other* website... why would that be happening! Strange...

Argh. Well, it wasn't as tidy an import as I would have hoped. Odd stuff has happened to the comments — not horrible, but unfortunate. Very few people comment on my stuff, so I'm sad that I've lost a good portion of those few! :( Anyway, now the plan is to delete the posts off of the other site and make it strictly professional/portfolio oriented. I'll have to rework how the home page works since, essentially, I won't have "Journal" content anymore. Hm. I have to think about how to work this...but not tonight. Mr. Slakethirst is home and needs my attention. :)

In the meantime, don't be surprised if you come across broken images or other oddness while rifling through the archives.

For those of you interested in asparagus… there are now 9 spears above ground. A few are even more vigorous than those pictures here, some real “stubbies.” I’ll stop being coy, you really can’t ignore the phallic nature of these things. Heh!

Thanks a lot! I wouldn’t necessarily say it looks better in person - there is a three dimensionality to the scratchboard that can cast shadows on the white lines. It does however look more fabulous at high resolution. The impact of the fine lines are lost on the web, but I like how it becomes photograph like as it is reduced. I recreated my original pencil sketch in Illustrator (hooray for Illustrators CS2’s 3-d function!) to get the angles right and set the type. I printed it out on my laserprinter, rubbed white chalk all over the back of the paper, and then traced the image onto the scratchboard. Everything beside the basic outline of each element was improvised, ie. the cross-hatching and the vinework. The version in Illustrator was sterile and I had to have a certain amount of faith in my abilities that executing the design in scratchboard would give it the texture and life that I wanted. I’m particularly fond of the subtle shadow under the door created by *not* working that area. Working from dark to light can really twist your head.

My apologies - this post started as a to-do to appear on the fabled WordPress/iCal calendar, but since that didn't work I'm making it more informative with links and what not. I'm sure I must be violating some code of bloggy-ethics in the process.
